Bach: St. John Passion | January 30, 2025 7:30 PM
Bach’s St. John Passion is not the first oratorio he wrote but it is his earliest such work to survive. He composed it just after his 39th birthday, for a vesper service on Good Friday, while he was director of church music in Leipzig. It premiered on April 7, 1724, three years before St. Matthew, his only other surviving Passion (of the five he wrote) was performed, also on a Good Friday in Leipzig.
Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center 1941 Broadway at, W 65th St, New York, NY 10023
MasterVoices: Blind Injustice | February 3rd and 4th, 2025, 7:30 PM
Based on the eponymous book by Mark Godsey and casework by the Ohio Innocence Project, a 12-member cast brings us the exonerees’ stories in their own words, adapted by librettist David Cote to be both spoken and sung. Composer Scott Davenport Richards’ score calls on jazz, funk, and hip-hop to help convey the stories’ vastness and their particularity – the twisting of a child’s words, being in the wrong place at the wrong time, bearing a passing resemblance to someone else. Commissioned by Cincinnati Opera in 2019, it has only grown more relevant since its premiere.
