upcoming Appearances
Martinů, The Mount of Three Lights: Fischer Center at Bard College | August 14th, 2025 7pm and August 15th 3pm
Featuring James Bagwell, the Bard Festival Chorale, and the renovated organ of the Rhinebeck Episcopal Church of the Messiah, this program intersperses organ solos with masterworks of the Czech choral tradition.
Two late Martinů works—Vigilie, his sole composition for organ, and The Mount of Three Lights, which sets texts from Czech folk song, contemporary travel-writing, and the New Testament—will be heard alongside the opening movements of Dvořák’s Mass in D, in which old church modes meet modern harmonies; the finale from Musica dominicalis, an organ symphony by the late Czech composer Petr Eben; three works for male voices by Leoš Janáček; and an organ solo from the same composer’s Glagolitic Mass, long recognized as a celebration of Slavic culture.

Mozart Great Mass in C Minor + John Corgliano Fern Hill | November 10th, 2025 at 7pm
This program pairs two powerful choral works separated by centuries but united by their expressive depth and emotional reach. John Corigliano’s Fern Hill, composed in 1960 and revised in 1999, sets the evocative early poem by Dylan Thomas. In contrast, the second half presents Mozart’s monumental Mass in C minor, K. 427, often referred to as the “Great” Mass. Composed in 1782–83 as a deeply personal vow following his marriage to Constanze Weber, the work remains unfinished yet stands among Mozart’s most ambitious sacred compositions and one of the most compelling sacred works of the Classical era.
